Asia Extends Educational Lead as US Scores Decline

Global test results show Asian students pulling ahead while American performance hits near 25-year lows, raising concerns about critical thinking skills in the digital age.
High school students across Asia are widening their academic advantage over Western peers, according to the latest global assessment released this week. The data reveals a troubling trend where reading, science, and math performance among 15-year-olds has continued to decline globally, even as artificial intelligence accelerates a worldwide race for technological talent.
The report highlights that top performers are now dominated by Asian jurisdictions, including Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. In contrast, secondary students in the United States saw their reading scores fall to levels not seen in nearly a quarter of a century, marking a stark lag behind their Chinese counterparts in the four major regions that submitted data.
Critical Thinking Skills Are Slipping
OECD officials warn that the most concerning aspect of these results is the decline in skills essential for the AI era, such as evaluating information and thinking critically. Andreas Schleicher, the OECD director for education, noted that students are increasingly less likely to think deeply or separate signal from noise in an information-saturated world.
Digital Distraction Impacts Classroom Focus
The assessment suggests that as technology advances, student performance is becoming less tied to family wealth but more affected by digital distractions. In China, Japan, and South Korea, fewer than 10% of students reported peer distraction from devices during science lessons, compared to a global average of 28%. Singapore’s approach, which balances technology with early emphasis on reading comprehension, offers a model for managing these tools.
Economic Stakes of Lower Aptitude
The rise in 'hasty readers' who rush through texts and make errors has nearly doubled since 2018. This shift has broader economic implications, as a Stanford University study cited in the report indicates that if all US 15-year-olds met a basic aptitude level, it could add over $40 trillion to the US economy over their working lives. However, the percentage of OECD students below this baseline increased to 20% in 2022 from 16% in 2018, signaling a growing gap in foundational skills.
