Asian students widen gap as US scores hit record lows

New global assessments reveal a widening educational divide, with Asian nations pulling ahead while American students struggle with declining critical thinking skills.
High school students in Asia are pulling away from their Western counterparts, a new global assessment shows. The 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment, released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, indicates that while global performance in reading, science, and math has generally declined, Asian jurisdictions have maintained or improved their standing. This trend highlights a significant shift in the global talent race as artificial intelligence reshapes educational expectations.
The data reveals a troubling trajectory for the United States. American secondary students saw their reading scores drop to levels not seen in 25 years. They now lag significantly behind their peers in China, particularly in the wealthy eastern coastal regions of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. These specific Chinese areas, along with Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Macao, and Taiwan, dominated the top ten rankings across all three core subjects.
Critical thinking skills are fading globally
The report warns that the decline is most damaging in the very skills required for the AI era. Andreas Schleicher, the OECD director for education and skills, noted that students are increasingly failing to evaluate information and think critically. In a world flooded with data, young people are less able to separate signal from noise. This erosion of deep thinking poses a risk to future economic productivity and innovation capabilities.
Digital distraction harms classroom focus
The study identifies digital distraction as a key factor behind the performance drop. In China, Japan, and South Korea, fewer than 10% of students reported that peers were distracted by devices during science lessons. In contrast, the global average is 28%. The report suggests that while technology is ubiquitous, its management in classrooms varies drastically. Singapore, for instance, uses technology but places a heavy early emphasis on reading comprehension, which may contribute to its top-tier results.
Economic stakes rise for US students
The consequences of these trends extend beyond test scores to the broader economy. A Stanford University study cited in the report estimates that if all 15-year-old Americans met a basic level of aptitude, it would add over $40 trillion to the US economy over their working lives. However, the percentage of OECD students falling below this baseline has increased from 16% in 2022 to 20% last year. As the US and China compete for technological leadership, the gap in foundational educational skills becomes a critical point of contention.
