Clearview AI is currently testing an experimental tool designed to help police departments build comprehensive digital profiles of suspects. The system, known as InquiryIQ, aims to streamline the process of identifying who a person is, who they know, and where they live by automatically gathering information from across the web. This represents a significant shift from the company’s earlier focus on simply matching faces to names.
According to reporting by WIRED, the tool functions as an assistant that takes initial details from an investigation and fans out to open webpages, analyze images, and compile a dossier. It seeks to identify employers, aliases, and associates. While the company states this is a prototype not yet available to customers, the implications for privacy and investigative speed are substantial.
Automating the search for identity
The core function of InquiryIQ is to automate what detectives currently do by hand. Instead of manually searching for clues, the system processes data to enrich the profile with personal details. This compression of time could mean that days or weeks of research are completed in minutes. For law enforcement, this speed is a major advantage in solving crimes quickly.
However, this efficiency comes with a distinct trade-off. By making it cheaper and faster to investigate, the tool lowers the barrier for what are known as fishing expeditions. This makes it practical for police to scrutinize individuals who might otherwise never be targeted. The ease of access increases the risk of unwarranted surveillance on a larger scale.
Controversial AI models under the hood
Code analysis suggests the tool relies on models from SpaceXAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot. The interface indicates that supplying demographic details like age, gender, and race can influence the system’s search decisions. This is concerning because these models have faced scrutiny for producing biased or inflammatory outputs in the past.
It remains unclear how these demographic inputs specifically shape the results. Clearview has declined to speculate on the mechanics, stating that these options were included for engineers to compare performance during testing. The lack of transparency regarding how the AI processes sensitive data adds a layer of risk to its potential use in justice systems.
Challenges in accountability and transparency
Generative AI systems can produce different answers from the same starting point, making it difficult to reconstruct why a specific lead was pursued. This opacity complicates the ability to audit the tool’s decisions. If a profile is built on flawed or biased data, it may be hard to prove or correct the error in a legal context.
Clearview asserts that no law enforcement user has ever used the tool and that it is not planned for release in its current form. The company argues it is merely automating existing search tasks rather than creating an automated investigator. Yet, the existence of such a sophisticated prototype highlights the rapid evolution of surveillance technology and the ongoing debate over its limits.
