Google has removed a new artificial intelligence feature from Google Earth that allowed users to generate photorealistic fake scenes within real satellite imagery. The tool was live for only twenty-four hours before the company pulled it following intense criticism from journalists and fact-checkers. During that short window, users created misleading images, including a fictional nuclear plant in Iran and a bomb crater next to a hospital in Gaza. The incident highlights a growing problem where AI makes it easier to fabricate evidence that looks authentic.
This development is particularly concerning because Google Earth has long been considered a reliable source of truth for conflict zones. For two decades, the platform has been the standard tool for open-source investigators verifying events in places like Syria and Yemen. By integrating image generation directly into the interface, Google blurred the line between verified data and synthetic content. Rapid Deployment Outpaced Safety Checks
