Oceanside Schools Integrate AI Tools Into Daily Lessons

California educators are testing new methods to help students use artificial intelligence responsibly, focusing on critical thinking rather than automation.
Artificial intelligence is moving into classrooms at the Oceanside Unified School District, marking a shift in how students engage with rapidly evolving technology. The initiative aims to prepare learners to use these tools responsibly, ensuring they develop critical thinking skills rather than relying on automation to complete their work.
At Ivey Ranch Elementary, fifth graders are using a platform called Snorkl to interact with AI. Students solve problems independently before submitting their answers, receiving immediate feedback that explains why an answer is correct or incorrect. This approach allows teachers to identify which students understand a concept and who needs additional support, enabling more efficient instruction.
Age-Based Approach to Technology
The district tailors its introduction of AI based on student age. Younger children, roughly ages four to six, focus on understanding what artificial intelligence is without directly using the tools. As students progress to middle school, AI is integrated into lessons with specific protections in place. By high school, the focus expands to using AI to deepen subject understanding and enhance creativity.
This phased approach ensures that younger learners build a conceptual foundation before handling complex tools. It also allows educators to monitor how students interact with the technology at each developmental stage, adjusting the curriculum as needed to maintain educational standards.
