OpenAI Board Gains Safety Critic Amid Security Concerns

Researcher Warns of Imminent Loss of Control

Christiano will serve on the board’s Safety and Security Committee, which is chaired by Carnegie Mellon University professor Zico Kolter. This committee holds the final authority on whether OpenAI releases new models, including recent deployments like the Astra system. By placing Christiano in this specific role, the company ensures that his critical perspective has direct influence over the go/no-go decisions for its most advanced products.
This appointment follows a period of internal and external tension, including the recent resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who cited irresponsible development practices as his reason for leaving.
