Pentagon Seeks AI to Sort Space and Missile Threats

The US defense sector is moving beyond human intuition to automate the detection of space and missile threats, aiming for a system that processes complex data in seconds.
The Pentagon is actively seeking artificial intelligence tools to manage the overwhelming volume of data generated by modern space and missile activities. Current human operators face significant challenges, including short decision windows and sensor data that is often fragmented or unclear. The new initiative aims to bridge this gap by using AI to convert raw inputs into a coherent picture of potential threats quickly enough to influence real-time operational decisions.
According to a solicitation from the Defense Innovation Unit, existing software struggles to distinguish between closely spaced objects and keep threat models up to date. The proposed project, called the Space Threat Intelligence Synthesis Engine, is designed to fuse massive streams of multi-source data. This includes live video, satellite imagery, radar feeds, and classified intelligence reports, all intended to uncover patterns that are difficult for humans to identify alone.
Speed requirements define the new system
The core requirement for this technology is speed. The Defense Innovation Unit is targeting an open-source system with a latency delay of no more than five seconds, with a preference for two seconds or less. This means the time between data arrival and the display of results must be nearly instantaneous. The system must also handle high throughput, processing 20 to 30 megabytes per minute with the capacity for bursts up to five gigabytes. These strict metrics are essential for the AI to be useful in fast-paced conflict scenarios where seconds determine the outcome.
AI assists rather than replaces operators
The AI is not intended to replace human judgment but to augment it. The system will generate alerts that include confidence scores, allowing analysts to prioritize which threats require immediate attention. It will provide intuitive visualizations for frontline operators and low-latency interfaces for automated command-and-control workflows. This hybrid approach ensures that while machines handle the heavy data lifting, humans retain the final authority on critical decisions, a necessary trade-off given the high stakes of missile defense.
Industry partners are already testing models
The urgency of this effort is driven by recent conflicts, such as those in Ukraine and Iran, where skies are filled with missiles and drones. With a persistent shortage of expensive interceptors like the Patriot system, operators must make rapid decisions on resource allocation. Defense contractors are already moving in this direction. Northrop Grumman announced a partnership with Camgian to integrate AI into air defense systems, while BAE Systems is collaborating with Scale AI. These industry moves parallel the government's solicitation, signaling a broader shift toward automated threat assessment.
The solicitation from the Defense Innovation Unit is due on September 24. Contractors must demonstrate that their solutions offer significant improvements in speed and accuracy compared to existing baselines.
