Startup raises $10M to modernize existing US factories

While Silicon Valley builds new automated plants, Harmoni is betting on upgrading the 280,000 legacy factories already operating in America. The company just closed a significant funding round to bring AI tools to aging machinery.
Harmoni has secured $10 million in Series A funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners. The company, which was founded in 2023, aims to bridge the technological gap in American manufacturing by equipping older facilities with AI-driven tools. Unlike competitors who design new factories from the ground up, Harmoni focuses on retrofitting existing equipment. This approach targets the vast number of US factories that still rely on traditional machinery and manual processes.
The startup’s core product consists of custom tablets that attach magnetically to factory machines. These devices serve as a central hub for workers to clock in, access instructions, and track production jobs. The system is designed to work with equipment ranging from modern digital units to machines built during World War II. By consolidating these tasks into a single interface, Harmoni seeks to reduce the administrative burden on factory staff.
Retrofitting legacy industrial systems
According to a report by GN technics/ai (en-US), the average American factory operates on technology that predates the internet. Many manufacturers are hesitant to replace expensive, functional machinery with new automated systems. However, experts note that these companies are open to adding modern software layers to their existing hardware. Harmoni’s solution addresses this by creating a digital wrapper around old equipment, allowing it to communicate with modern networks.
This strategy contrasts with the approach of other startups like Hadrian and Machina Labs, which build entirely new, robot-heavy facilities. Harmoni’s founders argue that the immediate need is to make current operations more efficient. They believe that arming existing workers with better data and tools is a faster path to competitiveness than waiting for full automation to be deployed in new buildings.
AI assistant for shop floor queries
The company is currently rolling out a new feature called HAL, an AI assistant integrated into its tablet system. Because the platform already tracks which machine is running and what job is in progress, HAL can answer specific questions without requiring users to input context manually. Workers can ask why a machine is slowing down or request maintenance tickets directly through the interface.
This functionality allows for real-time problem solving on the factory floor. For example, a worker can flag an issue for the next operator or file a maintenance request instantly. This reduces the time spent on manual data entry and allows for quicker responses to production issues. The goal is to make the interaction between workers and machines more intuitive and data-driven.
Reducing administrative time for workers
WessDel, a precision components manufacturer in San Jose, has used Harmoni’s system since 2024. Before adopting the technology, workers had to visit three different kiosks to clock in and manually enter machine data. This process could consume nearly an hour of a worker’s time. By consolidating these steps into a single magnetic tablet, the company aims to reclaim significant labor hours for productive work.
The trade-off for adopting such a system is the integration effort required to connect disparate legacy machines. While the tablets offer a unified interface, the backend must still parse data from equipment with varying levels of digital compatibility. However, for companies that cannot afford to shut down production for a full plant overhaul, this retrofitting approach offers a practical middle ground between manual operations and full automation.
