UK Government Pilots AI Training for Unemployed Youth

A new pilot scheme in Lancashire aims to connect 16- to 24-year-olds with AI skills and apprenticeships, addressing both youth unemployment and the demand for digital literacy.
In a community hub in Preston, the UK government is testing a new approach to youth unemployment by combining it with artificial intelligence training. The initiative takes place at the Vault, a recently opened facility near the city’s bus station, where young people attend short, intensive courses. The goal is to ensure that AI acts as a tool for job creation rather than a barrier for those entering the workforce.
This pilot scheme specifically targets individuals aged 16 to 24 who are not currently in education, employment, or training. With nearly a million young people in the UK falling into this category, the government sees an opportunity to bridge the skills gap. Participants learn to build AI tools and understand how businesses utilize the technology, preparing them for roles that require these emerging competencies.
Partners provide direct apprenticeship routes
The three-week program is designed with specific career outcomes in mind. Major companies, including JD Sports, Heinz, and Agilysys, have partnered with the scheme to offer apprenticeships to successful trainees. These roles are not generic entry-level positions but are tailored to AI-focused tasks, such as marketing specialization or IT support. This direct linkage aims to ensure that the skills taught in the bootcamp are immediately applicable in a professional setting.
Lauren Monks, an executive at IN4 Group, which operates the program, describes the initiative as a way to improve productivity and integrate AI into organizations. By securing placements with employers who actively seek these skills, the scheme attempts to solve two problems simultaneously: the lack of entry-level jobs for young people and the corporate need for digital talent.
Shifting perceptions of new technology
For many participants, the course changes their view of AI from a threat to a practical asset. Remy Simms, a 17-year-old attendee, noted that the training helped him understand how to work with the technology rather than against it. Similarly, Khudeija Rafique, an 18-year-old from Burnley, sees the skills as useful for any career path she might choose. This shift in mindset is central to the program’s success, as it encourages young people to engage with the tools shaping the modern economy.
Unknown impacts on non-graduate markets
While the initiative is promising, experts caution that the broader impact of AI on non-graduate jobs remains uncertain. Dr. Bouke Klein Teeselink from King’s College London notes that there is limited data on how AI affects entry-level work compared to the graduate market, where concerns about job displacement are more prominent. The scheme may provide valuable insights into whether these skills can effectively bridge the gap for those without university degrees.
