UK Graduate Employment Data Shows Coding Roles Shrinking

Recent data indicates a significant drop in entry-level software development jobs for UK graduates, with experts linking the decline to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools in the industry.
The career outlook for recent computer science and economics graduates in the United Kingdom has deteriorated noticeably, according to the latest graduate outcomes survey. Data compiled for the 2027 Guardian University Guide reveals that coding and software development were the fastest-falling occupations for new graduates last year. This trend marks a sharp reversal for a sector that previously offered some of the most secure and high-paying entry-level positions in the tech industry.
The decline is not limited to programming roles. Employer demand for graduates in well-paid financial categories, such as economics and management consulting, has also declined. Experts suggest that these specific fields are feeling the early effects of artificial intelligence, which is increasingly capable of producing software and financial analysis quickly and efficiently. This shift confirms long-standing predictions that AI would disrupt the labor market by automating tasks traditionally reserved for junior human workers.
Sharp drop in entry level coding roles
Matt Hiely-Rayner, director of the Intelligent Metrix consultancy that compiles the guide, highlighted a specific statistical drop. The proportion of computer science graduates securing professional jobs as coders or programmers fell from approximately 40 percent to just 28 percent last year. Furthermore, the share of these graduates moving into any graduate-level occupation dropped from over 60 percent two years ago to 50 percent. Hiely-Rayner noted that with AI providing responsive and cheap computational work, it is difficult to ignore its role in this trend.
The data comes from a survey conducted by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, which gathered responses from over 350,000 former students fifteen months after they completed their courses. This large dataset provides a clear snapshot of the current labor market realities for new entrants. The findings suggest that the traditional pathway from university degree to junior developer role is becoming less predictable and more competitive than it was just a few years ago.
Employers are changing job requirements
Charlie Ball, head of labor market intelligence at Jisc, the UK’s data and technology agency for education, observed that computer science graduates are diversifying into related roles such as cybersecurity and network engineering. While he is cautious about attributing the change solely to AI due to limited direct evidence, he acknowledged that it is hard to escape the conclusion that AI has played a role. He described the industry as changing, with graduates feeling the impact because they are the largest group of new employees.
In the finance sector, employers are reporting that they are not necessarily replacing jobs with AI but are changing the nature of the work itself. Many firms expect new hires to have familiarity with AI tools, shifting the baseline of required skills. However, this approach is not unanimous across the industry. Some companies are embracing AI tools and laying off staff to gain a competitive edge, while others are still experimenting. This inconsistency creates an uncertain environment for graduates trying to navigate their early careers.
Universities adapt to shifting market demands
In response to these changing dynamics, institutions are adjusting their curricula. The University of Birmingham, which rose to its highest ever position of 14th overall in the 2027 tables, is helping students prepare for this new landscape. Adam Tickell, the university’s vice-chancellor, explained that they are weaving employer-demanded skills into their courses. They have introduced an option for undergraduates to add an intercalated year in subjects like AI and data science, removing the usual prerequisites to make these skills accessible to a broader student base.
This strategic shift reflects a broader trend in higher education. As the traditional entry-level roles in coding and finance become scarcer, universities are recognizing the need to equip students with hybrid skills. The goal is to ensure that graduates are not only proficient in their core discipline but also capable of leveraging AI tools to remain competitive. This adaptation is seen as essential for preparing students for the current economic reality, regardless of how they feel about the technological changes occurring around them.
