Marvelous Europe has officially revealed Eternal Anima, a new role-playing game that blends classic turn-based combat with modern time-travel mechanics. The title is scheduled for a global release on March 4, 2027, and will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The game was unveiled during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, marking the first major look at the project since it was teased under the working title 'PROJECT LIFE is RPG' in 2023. According to GN technics/gaming, the project is being developed by a team of veteran RPG creators, including director Katsuhisa Higuchi and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima. The core premise involves a protagonist named Wade who must travel through time to save past civilizations from catastrophe, thereby freeing the present from a oppressive societal rule.

Combat mechanics rely on prediction

Eternal Anima retains the structure of traditional turn-based battles but introduces a tactical layer called Future Sight. This feature allows players to see the next move an enemy intends to make before the turn begins. By knowing the incoming attack, players can choose to delay the enemy, cancel their action entirely, or position their characters to mitigate damage. This shifts the focus from simple damage calculation to strategic anticipation, requiring players to manage the flow of battle rather than just reacting to it.

The system rewards careful planning, as misjudging the predicted outcome can leave the party vulnerable. It is a trade-off that adds depth for players who enjoy puzzle-like combat, but it may feel restrictive for those who prefer fast-paced, reactive action. The goal is to let players dictate the rhythm of the fight, ensuring that every command has a clear consequence in the timeline of the battle.

Legacy systems define character progression

Character growth is tied to the concept of Psychometry, a power that allows Wade to read memories stored in ancient artifacts. By deciphering these objects, players can unlock abilities and classes used by heroes from different eras. This means that a character’s capabilities are not just leveled up through experience, but inherited from the past. Players can combine these legacy traits to create unique playstyles that reflect the history of the world.

This system encourages exploration and collection, as finding the right artifacts can unlock powerful combat options. However, it also means that progression is tied to narrative discovery rather than pure stat accumulation. Players who ignore the story-driven collection aspects may find their character options limited compared to those who engage deeply with the world's history.

Physical editions set pricing standards

Marvelous Europe has detailed the physical availability of the game, which will be released in standard and limited editions. The standard edition is priced at 49.99 euros, while the limited edition costs 79.99 euros. The limited version includes a two-disc soundtrack, nine character art cards, and an art book. Digital pricing has not yet been announced, which is a common practice for major releases to allow for regional price adjustments.

The physical release is limited to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. PC players via Steam will need to purchase the digital version. For collectors, the limited edition offers tangible items that are not available digitally, but the price difference is significant. Buyers should consider whether the physical media and art materials justify the extra cost, especially since the core gameplay experience is identical across all versions.
