Nvidia has released a significant improvement to its ray tracing technology that is available as a free update for all current GeForce RTX graphics cards, enhancing visual quality without requiring new hardware.

Nvidia has unveiled its latest advancement in ray tracing technology, a feature that promises to make lighting and reflections in video games appear significantly more realistic. Unlike previous major graphical updates that were tied to the launch of new hardware, this improvement is being distributed as a free software update. It is designed to work with every GeForce RTX graphics card produced in the last few years, allowing owners of older models to access the same visual fidelity as those with the newest chips.

The update, identified as Preset F in the Nvidia application, replaces the previous generation's settings. It combines upscaling and noise reduction into a single process, which helps clean up the grainy artifacts often seen in ray-traced scenes. According to XDA Developers, this approach addresses two major challenges in rendering simultaneously, resulting in images that are clearer and more stable without demanding additional processing power from the user's system.

Visual improvements in dimly lit environments

Testing in games like Resident Evil Requiem reveals that the new model excels in scenes with low light and reflective surfaces. In dimly lit areas with wet floors, the updated settings produce reflections with more convincing color and definition. The lighting appears brighter and more structured, reducing the noisy grain that previously obscured details. However, the trade-off is that the system can sometimes overcorrect, giving surfaces a glossy sheen that feels slightly artificial compared to the natural lighting of the scene.

Performance remains largely unchanged in these scenarios. Benchmarks show that the frame rate difference between the old and new settings is negligible, often falling within the margin of error for standard testing. This means users can enjoy the visual clarity improvements without sacrificing the smoothness of gameplay, a critical factor for competitive or immersive experiences.

Stability gains in complex path tracing

The benefits become even more pronounced in games that utilize path tracing, a more computationally intensive form of ray tracing. In Alan Wake 2, the new model demonstrates superior temporal stability. High-contrast edges, such as a bright lamp against a dark background, show less shimmer and grain. Textures on objects like wooden bars and brick walls remain sharp and detailed, preserving the artistic intent of the developers.

In this specific title, the update actually delivers a performance boost. Tests indicated that the new settings ran about six percent faster on average compared to the previous version. This unexpected efficiency gain suggests that the underlying technology is not only better at cleaning up images but is also more optimized for processing complex lighting data, offering a double benefit of higher quality and slightly better speed.

Accessibility for existing hardware owners

A key aspect of this release is its backward compatibility. The technology works across all RTX generations, from Turing cards released in 2018 up to the latest Blackwell architecture. This inclusivity is rare for features of this magnitude, which are typically reserved for flagship products. It ensures that the majority of the current user base can benefit from the improved rendering pipeline without needing to purchase new equipment.

While the visual gains are substantial, users should note that the results depend heavily on the specific game implementation. Not every title will showcase the improvements equally, and some scenes may exhibit the overly glossy artifacts mentioned earlier. Nevertheless, for the vast majority of ray-traced content, the update represents a meaningful step forward in photorealism that is accessible to a wide range of gamers at no extra cost.
