However, the community quickly discovered alternative methods that rendered his intended challenge obsolete. Instead of relying on damage output to distinguish the real Skeram from the fakes, players used simpler, more reliable indicators. Cheng, who has recently shared these anecdotes on social media, expressed a mix of amusement and frustration at how easily his design was bypassed, noting that despite his efforts to create a fair but difficult puzzle, the players found a shortcut that made the challenge trivial.

The intended damage puzzle mechanic

Cheng’s original design for the Skeram encounter was rooted in a specific mathematical relationship. When the boss reached 75%, 50%, and 25% health, he would split into several copies. The core of the challenge was that the illusions had half the health pool of the real entity. Cheng wanted raiders to spread their damage across all copies and observe which ones depleted their health bars faster. The faster-depleting copies were the illusions, while the real boss would take longer to drop to the next threshold.

The goal was to prevent players from accidentally killing the illusions too quickly. If a raid group focused fire on the wrong targets, they risked bringing the real boss down to a lower health percentage prematurely. This would trigger additional splits, resulting in a chaotic scenario with too many enemies on screen, often leading to a team wipe. Cheng described this as a test of discipline and communication, expecting players to coordinate their attacks via voice chat to identify the correct target based on health bar depletion rates.

Players found immediate visual tells

The reality of the situation diverged significantly from the designer's vision. Cheng admitted that the first version of the encounter contained a glaring error: the text "Pet of Skeram" was literally displayed under the names of the illusions. This obvious label allowed players to identify the fake bosses instantly without needing to monitor health bars. Even after this error was corrected, other issues persisted. Interface modifications allowed players to read unique creature IDs, which clearly distinguished the real boss from the copies. Additionally, mismatched localization strings provided further visual cues that made the identification process effortless.

As the game evolved, players developed even more sophisticated workarounds. One popular method involved sending a hunter’s pet to attack Skeram before the split occurred. Because the pet would remain locked onto the original target, it would continue to attack the real boss even after the split, effectively marking the correct entity for the entire raid. Another technique involved using mana-burning abilities. Since the illusions spawned with full mana pools while the real boss did not, the damage taken from mana-draining spells revealed the true target immediately. These methods rendered Cheng’s intended damage-based puzzle irrelevant.

A designer's acceptance of player ingenuity

Despite the failure of his specific design goal, Cheng maintains a respectful attitude toward the community’s problem-solving abilities. He distinguishes between genuine bugs or exploits, which should be fixed to preserve game balance, and players simply finding more efficient ways to achieve a goal. In his view, the latter is a testament to the intelligence and creativity of the player base. He acknowledges that while his specific mechanism for identifying the real Skeram was defeated, the overall encounter remained challenging due to other factors, and the players' success is a point of pride for the community.

This anecdote highlights a fundamental dynamic in long-running online games: the continuous arms race between designers and players. Designers create puzzles with specific intended solutions, but players, driven by competition and curiosity, will often find alternative paths that bypass the intended constraints. For Cheng, this experience serves as a reminder that game design is a collaborative process, where the final product is shaped as much by player behavior as by the developer's initial vision.
