AMD Launches Budget CPUs to Counter High RAM Prices

Two new AMD processors aim to keep gaming affordable despite rising memory costs.
AMD has launched two new processors designed to keep personal computer building accessible as memory prices climb. The Ryzen 5 5500F and Ryzen 5 7500 target budget-conscious buyers by offering solid performance at lower price points than their direct predecessors.
According to GN technics/hardware, these chips are not just incremental updates but strategic moves to soften the financial impact of expensive RAM. By providing strong core performance without demanding the most expensive components, AMD is attempting to retain users who might otherwise delay upgrades or switch platforms.
Two Chips Target Different Budgets
The Ryzen 5 5500F is priced at $99, while the Ryzen 5 7500 costs $189. Both chips feature six cores and twelve threads, which is sufficient for modern gaming and multitasking. The 5500F uses the older Zen 3 architecture on the AM4 platform, whereas the 7500 uses the newer Zen 4 architecture on the AM5 platform.
This distinction matters because the platforms are not interchangeable. AM4 boards are cheaper and widely available, but they support only DDR4 memory. AM5 boards are newer and more expensive, supporting faster DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0 connectivity. Buyers must choose between saving on the motherboard and memory now, or investing in a platform that will support future upgrades.
Performance Close to Higher Tier Models
The Ryzen 5 5500F is essentially a slightly slower version of the more expensive Ryzen 5 5600. It has a lower boost clock and half the level three cache, but it still delivers strong gaming performance. For many users, the difference in frame rates is negligible, making the $99 price point a compelling option for those who do not need the absolute highest speeds.
The Ryzen 5 7500 is similar to the Ryzen 5 7500F, but it includes integrated graphics. This allows users to connect a monitor directly to the motherboard, which is useful for testing builds or for users who do not plan to buy a dedicated graphics card immediately. However, the integrated graphics are basic and not suitable for demanding games.
Trade-Offs in Platform Choice
Choosing the Ryzen 5 5500F means staying on the AM4 platform, which is a dead end for future CPU upgrades. You cannot simply drop in a newer, faster AMD processor later without replacing the motherboard and memory. The Ryzen 5 7500, on the other hand, sits on the AM5 platform, which AMD has committed to supporting for several years. This offers a clearer path for future upgrades.
The catch is cost. Building with the Ryzen 5 7500 requires buying an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory, both of which are more expensive than their AM4 and DDR4 counterparts. The Ryzen 5 5500F allows for a much cheaper initial build, but it limits how far you can upgrade that specific system in the future. Buyers must weigh the immediate savings against the long-term flexibility.
