Two new mid-range processors aim to make assembling a personal computer more affordable despite the current economic climate.

AMD has officially introduced the Ryzen 5 5500F and Ryzen 5 7500, two processors designed specifically for budget-conscious builders. These chips are intended to alleviate the financial strain caused by recent increases in memory prices. By offering solid performance at lower price points, the company aims to keep high-quality computing accessible to a wider audience.

The Ryzen 5 5500F is priced at $99, while the Ryzen 5 7500 costs $189. Both chips feature six cores, but they differ in their underlying architecture. The 5500F uses the older Zen 3 design, whereas the 7500 utilizes the newer Zen 4 technology. Both are now available for purchase at retailers in the United States.

Distinct Architectures for Different Needs

Although the model names are similar, the Ryzen 5 5500F belongs to a different product family than the standard Ryzen 5 5500. The 5500F is essentially a lower-clocked version of the more expensive Ryzen 5 5600. It shares the same multi-chiplet structure but runs at a slightly slower speed and has half the high-speed memory cache. This makes it a cost-effective entry point for users who already own compatible older hardware.

In contrast, the Ryzen 5 7500 is identical to the previously released Ryzen 5 7500F, except for one key addition: integrated graphics. This feature allows users to connect a monitor directly to the processor without needing a separate graphics card. For those who do not plan to purchase a dedicated video card, this inclusion provides significant value by covering basic display needs.

Price Comparison and Market Position

The pricing strategy positions these chips clearly within the market. The Ryzen 5 5500F is significantly cheaper than the Ryzen 5 5600, which currently retails for around $159. This price difference represents a substantial saving for buyers looking to upgrade their existing systems. However, it is still more expensive than the tray versions of the Ryzen 5 5500, which can be found for as low as $74.

The higher cost of the 5500F compared to the 5500 is justified by better gaming performance and support for faster storage interfaces. According to Tom's Hardware, these improvements unlock capabilities such as faster solid-state drives and graphics cards. For the Ryzen 5 7500, the price sits below the Ryzen 5 7600, offering a slightly slower clock speed but the same core count and memory support.

Choosing between these options requires understanding specific trade-offs. The Ryzen 5 5500F supports the older DDR4 memory standard, which is generally cheaper than the newer DDR5 standard required by the Ryzen 5 7500. This makes the 5500F an attractive option for those who already have DDR4 installed or want to minimize initial costs. The 7500, however, offers access to the newer platform, which may provide better longevity and future upgrade paths.

Ultimately, the decision depends on the user's existing hardware and future plans. The 5500F is a practical choice for upgrading an older PC, while the 7500 is suitable for building a new system with the latest standards. Both processors provide strong performance for their price, helping to offset the rising costs of other components like memory.
