Raspberry Pi launches new hardware for AI and budget users

Raspberry Pi has released five new hardware options, ranging from local AI accelerators to budget-friendly single-board computers, catering to diverse user needs.
Raspberry Pi has expanded its hardware lineup with five new products designed to address specific gaps in the single-board computer market. The updates focus on enabling local artificial intelligence capabilities, offering compact embedded solutions, and providing more affordable entry points for hobbyists. According to GN technics/hardware, these releases reflect a strategic shift toward diverse use cases, from industrial automation to home desktops.
The most significant addition is the AI HAT + 2, a board that connects to the Raspberry Pi 5 to run generative AI models locally. This move allows users to process data without relying on cloud services, which is critical for applications requiring privacy or low latency. While this opens up new possibilities for robotics and smart cameras, it also requires a compatible Pi 5 base and specific software integration.
Local AI processing becomes accessible
The AI HAT + 2 acts as an accelerator for large language models and computer vision tasks. It supports functions like object detection and pose estimation directly on the device. This is particularly useful for home automation and industrial systems where data privacy is a priority. However, the performance is dependent on the underlying Raspberry Pi 5 hardware, meaning the total system cost and complexity increase compared to using a standalone AI chip.
For developers building custom devices, the Compute Module 5 offers a smaller form factor of the Pi 5. It is designed to be integrated into carrier boards for kiosks, robotics, and other embedded systems. This module allows for specific memory and storage configurations, but it lacks standard ports, requiring a custom board for connectivity. This trade-off makes it ideal for specialized hardware but less suitable for general-purpose desktop use.
Budget options trade memory for cost
Raspberry Pi has also introduced a 3-GB version of the Raspberry Pi 4 and a 1-GB model of the Raspberry Pi 5. These variants are priced lower to accommodate rising memory costs. The 3-GB Pi 4 retains its quad-core processor and dual 4K display support, making it a viable option for media centers. The 1-GB Pi 5, however, is limited to basic projects due to its constrained memory, despite having the same fast processor as its higher-end siblings.
These budget models appeal to users who need the core processing power of the latest architecture but do not require large amounts of RAM. The trade-off is clear: reduced multitasking capability and limited capacity for resource-intensive applications. The Raspberry Pi 500+ is a new all-in-one desktop computer featuring a built-in mechanical keyboard. It ships with 16 GB of RAM and a 256-GB SSD, and includes an M.2 slot for additional storage. This design is aimed at users who want a simple, compact computer for everyday tasks. The inclusion of standard desktop features makes it a direct competitor to other small-form-factor PCs, though it remains rooted in the Linux-based Raspberry Pi OS.
