By using Seagate as the baseline, they calculated the adjusted failure hazard for other major brands. HGST, which was acquired by Western Digital in 2012, demonstrated the highest reliability, with a failure rate only 39.5% of Seagate’s. Western Digital followed closely at 51.4%, while Toshiba recorded the highest failure risk at 107% of the baseline.

This gap is significant because it moves beyond simple failure counts to account for how long drives were in service. The analysis suggests that HGST and Western Digital drives generally outlast their Seagate and Toshiba counterparts under similar conditions. For organizations managing large arrays of storage, this difference can translate into fewer replacements and lower maintenance costs over time.

Methodology Accounts for Drive Age

A common criticism of large-scale drive studies is that they compare apples to oranges, mixing old units with new ones. To address this, the researchers employed survival and duration regression models. These statistical tools allow for a fair comparison by holding variables like installation year, capacity, and operating temperature constant. This ensures that the observed differences are due to the manufacturing quality of the brand rather than the age of the hardware.

The study also accounted for right-censored data, where drives were removed from service without failing. This is a crucial detail, as many drives are replaced during capacity upgrades or migrations. By treating these removals correctly, the researchers avoided inflating failure rates for brands that were simply upgraded away. This rigorous approach lends credibility to the findings, particularly regarding the performance of Toshiba, which was represented by newer installations.
