Honor and ARRI bring cinema-grade controls to smartphones

At the Venice Film Festival, Honor revealed new devices that integrate professional cinema camera technology into handheld form factors, shifting the focus from raw resolution to creative control.
Honor presented its latest imaging initiatives at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, marking a significant step in its collaboration with ARRI, a company known for professional cinema cameras. The announcement centered on two devices: the Robot Phone and the upcoming Magic9 Pro Max. Both phones aim to bridge the gap between casual smartphone photography and professional filmmaking by embedding advanced optical and processing tools directly into the hardware. The core of this strategy is the integration of ARRI’s image science, which has shaped the visual language of cinema for over a century. By adapting professional workflows to mobile platforms, Honor allows users to capture footage with specific cinematic characteristics. This includes using standardized color profiles and gamma curves that simplify the editing process. The goal is not just to take sharper photos, but to provide a consistent, professional-grade toolset for video creators who need reliability and predictability in their output.
Mechanical stabilization changes phone design
The Robot Phone stands out for its internal mechanical structure. It features a motorized three-axis gimbal system that physically stabilizes the main camera sensor. This hardware-based approach differs from traditional electronic stabilization, which relies on software algorithms to steady the image. By moving the lens assembly mechanically, the device can achieve smoother footage even in challenging conditions. This design allows the 200-megapixel main sensor to remain steady, reducing the need for bulky external stabilizers that videographers typically carry.
The physical mechanism supports a 200-megapixel sensor with a wide aperture, paired with a periscope telephoto lens for zoom capabilities. This setup is designed to handle a variety of shooting scenarios, from wide-angle landscapes to close-up details. The inclusion of a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens completes the triple-camera array. The Magic9 Pro Max extends these features to a mainstream flagship, featuring a dual 200-megapixel camera setup. Its primary sensor is also mounted on a mechanical gimbal, achieving a high stabilization rating. The device uses a distinctive moss green finish and a camera module design that reflects ARRI’s professional aesthetic. By bringing these specialized video tools to a standard flagship, Honor makes professional-grade controls accessible to a wider audience.
