A new initiative at Stony Brook University aims to replace static screens with a physical assistant. The robot, named Rubo, is designed to handle wayfinding and multilingual support in busy library settings.

Stony Brook University has secured $298,000 to develop Rubo, a humanoid robot intended for real-world campus duties. Unlike standard digital chatbots that exist only on screens, Rubo is built to stand in high-traffic areas like libraries and answer questions face-to-face. The funding comes from the President’s Fast Impact Fund and represents a significant step in integrating physical AI into academic services.

The project is described as a first-of-its-kind effort in academic libraries. While a few institutions have experimented with robots, none have combined humanoid form, embodied AI, and conversational systems into a single service model. Rubo is meant to bridge the gap between online information retrieval and in-person assistance, offering a tangible presence for students and visitors who prefer direct interaction over typing into a website.

Moving AI Beyond the Screen

The core distinction of Rubo is its physicality. Traditional AI assistants require users to look down at a device, whereas Rubo engages at eye level. This design choice aims to make complex information access feel more natural. By operating in open spaces, the robot can observe context and respond to gestures or verbal cues, reducing the friction often associated with navigating large university campuses.

However, this shift from digital to physical carries inherent trade-offs. A robot cannot be as easily updated or patched as a software update to a chatbot. If the hardware malfunctions or the AI misinterprets a complex request, the error is visible and public. The university must balance the novelty of the technology with the reliability expected of essential campus services.

Addressing High-Volume Campus Needs

The deployment is driven by specific data points from recent years. Library staff recorded approximately 13,000 in-person directional questions during the 2024-2025 fiscal year, a volume that strains human staff time. Rubo is designed to absorb this repetitive workload, handling common inquiries about room locations, opening hours, and basic procedures. This allows librarians to focus on higher-level research assistance rather than simple wayfinding.

Accessibility is a central pillar of the project. Rubo will support multiple languages and offer both audio and text-based interaction modes. This is crucial for a diverse student body where language barriers can hinder access to resources. By providing a consistent, multilingual interface, the robot aims to reduce the anxiety some students feel when asking for help in a non-native language.

Building on Existing Infrastructure

The university is not starting from scratch. The project leverages existing locally hosted, open-source large language models and dedicated AI development environments. A chatbot system currently in development will serve as the cognitive foundation for Phase I testing. This approach ensures that the robot’s conversational abilities are grounded in the same robust infrastructure already used for digital services, minimizing the risk of isolated, brittle technology.
