Three major brands are betting on local processing to cut costs and protect privacy, but the technology still has hurdles to clear.
The home security industry is undergoing a significant shift away from the subscription-based model that has dominated the market for nearly a decade. At IFA Berlin 2026, Reolink, aosu, and eufy all unveiled new camera systems designed to process video data locally on the device rather than sending it to the cloud. This approach aims to address growing consumer concerns about data privacy while eliminating the recurring monthly fees that have become standard for cloud storage and advanced features.
The core promise of these new products is independence. By relying on local storage and on-device artificial intelligence, these brands are offering a model where users retain full control over their footage without needing an internet connection to access basic analytics. However, this transition is not without trade-offs. The effectiveness of local AI detection remains to be tested in real-world conditions, and the hardware required to support these processing capabilities often comes with higher upfront costs and specific power requirements.
Local Processing Reduces Cloud Dependence
Reolink leads this charge with its Home Hub 2, a device that allows up to eight cameras to store and process data locally. This hub supports large external storage drives and uses on-device AI to let users search for footage using plain-language descriptions. The company emphasizes that this functionality does not require a cloud plan, offering a direct alternative to the subscription tiers that competitors like Ring and Nest have popularized.
Aosu takes a similar approach but focuses on the coordination between multiple devices. Their aosuCortex system manages up to eight cameras, passing tracking information from one device to another without external servers. The company claims this local processing results in a 30% reduction in power consumption, a critical factor for solar-powered setups. This efficiency suggests that local AI can be more energy-friendly than constant cloud uploads, though the complexity of managing multiple local nodes remains a technical challenge.
Hardware Specs Meet Real World Limits
The hardware behind these systems is impressive on paper. Reolink’s OMVI 2i Ultra features dual cameras with a detachable battery rated for six months of use, charged by a small solar panel. Eufy, now part of Anker, is integrating a high-performance AI chip into its home hubs to run large language models locally. These specifications highlight a trend toward more powerful, self-contained devices that can handle complex video analysis without external assistance.
However, the practical benefits depend on the user’s specific setup. Solar-powered cameras require consistent light exposure to maintain functionality, and local storage systems demand significant hardware investments. While the elimination of monthly fees is a clear financial advantage, the initial cost of these local AI hubs and high-resolution cameras can be substantial. Consumers must weigh the long-term savings against the higher upfront price and the technical effort required to maintain a fully local network.
Privacy Gains Come With Trade-offs
The primary driver for this shift is privacy. By keeping data on the user’s own hardware, these brands are appealing to consumers who are wary of cloud-based surveillance.
