Windows 11 hides its fastest power plan from most users

A hidden setting promises peak performance but carries significant trade-offs for everyday users.
Windows 11 contains a power setting called Ultimate Performance that is intentionally hidden from the standard interface. According to XDA Developers, this plan is designed to keep your computer's components running at their maximum speed at all times. It bypasses the usual energy-saving mechanisms that allow hardware to slow down during periods of low activity.
While the setting is technically available, it is not visible in the Settings app or the traditional Control Panel by default. Users must execute a specific command in the terminal to reveal it. However, the feature is primarily intended for high-end desktop workstations and may not even appear on laptops or smaller devices due to hardware limitations.
Constant maximum speed creates heat
The core function of this plan is to prevent the processor and storage drives from entering low-power states. In a typical setup, these components ramp down when idle to save energy, which can introduce tiny delays when a task suddenly requires power. Ultimate Performance eliminates this transition time by keeping everything spinning at full capacity, ensuring immediate responsiveness.
This approach comes with a clear cost. Your computer will consume more electricity, run hotter, and likely produce more fan noise. For most users, the slight reduction in latency is not worth the increased wear and tear on the hardware or the higher energy bill.
Unlocking the setting requires a command
To enable the plan, you must open the Windows Terminal and enter a specific PowerShell command that duplicates a hidden performance scheme. Once executed, the option should appear in the Power Options menu within the Control Panel. No restart is required for the setting to take effect.
However, this method is not universal. Testing shows that the plan often fails to appear on laptops and mini PCs, even when using the correct command. It is generally restricted to desktop computers with capable hardware, and attempting to force it on unsupported devices may yield no results or require third-party tools that carry their own risks.
Most users see no benefit
Despite the technical ability to unlock this mode, experts advise against using it for daily tasks. The performance gains are negligible for standard workloads like web browsing, office applications, or media consumption. The time it takes for modern processors to ramp up to speed is so short that the lack of a hidden boost is rarely noticeable to the average user.
The trade-off is that you lose the efficiency benefits of modern power management. Unless you are running specialized professional software that demands constant peak performance, the standard balanced plan offers a better experience. It provides sufficient speed while keeping your device cool, quiet, and energy-efficient.
