Hanwha Systems has introduced a new AI platform that turns raw satellite data into actionable intelligence, marking its first overseas launch at a major European defense exhibition.

Hanwha Systems has officially unveiled its Space AI Analytics Solution at MSPO 2026 in Kielce, Poland. This marks the first time the Korean defense firm has presented this specific AI-driven technology to an overseas audience. The event took place on September 9, drawing attention from global space and defense industry leaders. The core of the innovation is the ability to process live satellite imagery in real-time, transforming static data into immediate tactical insights.

The system is designed to handle the complexities of modern battlefield monitoring by automating the detection of objects and anomalies. Rather than requiring analysts to manually scan vast amounts of visual data, the AI extracts key information and summarizes it for decision-makers. This approach aims to reduce the time between image capture and operational understanding, a critical factor in both military engagements and disaster response scenarios.

Fusing Optical and Radar Data

A significant technical advantage of this solution is its ability to combine two distinct types of satellite imagery: electro-optical (EO) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). EO satellites provide high-resolution color images that are easy for humans to interpret, while SAR satellites can operate day or night and through adverse weather conditions.

However, SAR data presents a trade-off. The resulting images are often black-and-white radar returns that are difficult to visually interpret, especially for identifying specific objects like aircraft or vehicles. The AI solution addresses this by enhancing the resolution of SAR data and identifying key assets within seconds. By fusing this with high-resolution EO imagery, the system compensates for the limitations of radar, providing a more comprehensive and clear picture of the situation on the ground.

Integrating Intelligence with Weapon Systems

The primary application of this technology is to support Hanwha’s existing defense products. The solution features a dedicated interface that links satellite intelligence directly to strike systems, including the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher. This integration allows for a more streamlined workflow where reconnaissance data is immediately available to fire direction control systems, potentially improving the speed and accuracy of tactical responses.

Balancing Speed and Operational Complexity

While the promise of real-time intelligence is compelling, the deployment of such systems comes with inherent complexities. The reliance on AI for critical decision-making means that the accuracy of the model is paramount. Any errors in object detection or situational analysis could have significant consequences in a military context. Furthermore, the system’s effectiveness depends heavily on the quality of the input data from the satellites, creating a dependency on robust space infrastructure.

Hanwha Systems positions this launch as a step toward completing a proprietary space-ground integrated infrastructure. By controlling both the satellite data collection and the AI analysis, the company aims to offer a seamless end-to-end solution.
