Apple has confirmed that watchOS 27 arrives on September 14, bringing a smarter Siri but removing familiar features like Walkie-Talkie.

Apple has officially confirmed that the next major update for the Apple Watch, known as watchOS 27, will be released on Monday, September 14. This update marks a significant shift in how users interact with their devices, primarily by introducing a more capable version of the Siri assistant. According to reports from 9to5Mac, this is the most substantial change to the watch's software in recent years, though it comes with notable trade-offs for long-time users.

The headline feature is a dedicated Siri app that allows the watch to handle questions and requests more independently. Previously, many tasks required the iPhone to be nearby or active. Now, the watch can process broader knowledge queries and everyday requests without constant reliance on the phone. While this increases the device's standalone utility, it also means that some familiar shortcuts and apps are disappearing to make room for the new interface.

Siri becomes more independent

The new Siri integration aims to make the Apple Watch a more self-sufficient tool. In recent beta tests, the assistant showed significant improvements in responsiveness, particularly for common daily tasks. Users reported that the watch could answer questions and execute commands with less lag and fewer errors than in previous versions. This update is designed to reduce the need to constantly reach for a smartphone, making the watch a more complete communication and information hub on its own.

However, the enhanced capabilities come with a specific condition. The improved Siri functionality relies heavily on the device's processing power and connectivity. While the watch can handle more on its own, complex queries may still require a connection to the broader Apple ecosystem. This represents a balance between independence and ecosystem integration, ensuring that the watch remains a companion to the iPhone rather than a complete replacement for it in all scenarios.

Familiar features face removal

Not every change in watchOS 27 is an addition. Apple is removing the Walkie-Talkie app, a feature that allowed users to have real-time voice conversations with other Apple Watch owners. This removal is part of a broader effort to streamline the operating system and focus on the new Siri-centric experience. Additionally, the previous multitasking shortcut, which involved double-clicking the Digital Crown, is no longer available. These changes may be inconvenient for users who relied on these specific functions for quick communication or app switching.

The interface for launching apps is also changing. Instead of a direct jump to the app grid, pressing the Digital Crown now opens a dynamic view that includes suggested apps and the new Siri interface. While this aims to provide more context-aware suggestions, it adds an extra step for users who want to quickly access a specific application. The full app launcher is still available, but it is now one step further away, prioritizing the assistant and recommendations over direct access.

Compatibility and new tools

The update is not available for all Apple Watch models. watchOS 27 supports Apple Watch Series 9 and newer, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer, and Apple Watch SE 3. Owners of older models will not receive this specific software update, meaning they will miss out on the new Siri capabilities and interface changes. This limitation highlights Apple's strategy of pushing newer hardware by withholding major software features from older devices.

Beyond Siri, the update includes other quality-of-life improvements. The Find My app is now unified, making it easier to track devices and items in one place. Smart Stack suggestions have been expanded, offering more relevant apps based on context and time of day. Workout Buddy has also received enhancements, providing more detailed feedback and tracking during exercise sessions. These additions aim to make the daily use of the watch more seamless and informative, though the removal of Walkie-Talkie remains a significant loss for many users.
