The latest Apple Watch Ultra no longer lists Russia's GLONASS system in its technical specifications, a change that may improve accuracy but reduces satellite coverage in some regions.

Apple has quietly removed support for GLONASS, Russia's global navigation satellite system, from the Apple Watch Ultra 4. According to technical specifications reviewed by MacRumors, the new device relies exclusively on GPS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou. This marks a departure from the previous Ultra 3 model, which included all five systems in its satellite constellation.

For most users, this change will likely result in a more precise location fix with less background processing. However, it does mean that in certain remote areas where other satellites have limited visibility, the watch will have one fewer option for determining its position. Apple has not provided an official statement explaining the removal, but the technical rationale suggests a move toward efficiency and signal quality over raw satellite count.

Signal Quality Over Satellite Count

The decision appears to be driven by the technical architecture of modern satellite receivers. The four systems retained by Apple use a similar signaling method known as CDMA and support multiple frequency bands. This allows the watch to measure distances to satellites with high precision, reducing errors caused by atmospheric interference or hardware timing delays.

GLONASS, by contrast, uses a different signal structure. Consumer-grade devices typically can only receive a single frequency from GLONASS satellites, whereas the Ultra 4 is designed to process dual-frequency signals from other constellations. Because the receiver cannot fully utilize the second frequency from GLONASS, the additional satellite provides less value. In fact, mixing these different signal types can sometimes introduce small positioning errors if the hardware timing corrections are not perfectly aligned.

Battery Life And Processing Efficiency

Dropping a satellite system is not just about accuracy; it is also about resource management. Every satellite signal the processor handles requires computational power and energy. By streamlining the receiver to work with four compatible systems, Apple can potentially reduce the workload on the chip. This efficiency gain could translate into slightly longer battery life, a critical feature for a smartwatch that users expect to last for days on a single charge.

The trade-off is minimal for the average user in urban or suburban environments, where GPS, Galileo, and BeiDou provide ample coverage. The loss is most relevant in very specific geographic scenarios where GLONASS satellites might have had a clearer line of sight than the others, a situation that is increasingly rare given the global spread of the remaining constellations.

Why The Standard Watch Keeps GLONASS

Interestingly, the standard Apple Watch Series 12 continues to support GLONASS. This distinction highlights the difference in hardware capabilities between the two lines. The standard Series 12 is a single-frequency device, meaning it does not have the advanced dual-frequency processing hardware found in the Ultra line.

For a single-frequency receiver, the limitation that makes GLONASS less useful on the Ultra model is not as significant. Since the standard watch cannot take advantage of the extra frequency data from other systems anyway, adding GLONASS provides a simple boost to satellite visibility without the complexity of managing mismatched signal architectures. This approach ensures that the more affordable model retains maximum compatibility while the premium Ultra model focuses on high-precision performance.
