Odesa’s Chornomorets Stadium, a major sports venue in Ukraine, was struck by a Russian attack on August 7, causing significant destruction and injuring at least one person. The assault occurred at about 3:30 p.m., just hours after the Ukrainian Air Force issued a warning about incoming jet-powered drones.

Governor Oleh Kiper reported that the stadium suffered damage to its roof, glazing, and spectator stands. A 29-year-old woman present at the site during the strike was hurt but received immediate medical treatment at the location. The stadium, located near the port in central Odesa, has a seating capacity of 34,164 and is a hub for top men’s and women’s football in the country.

The attack disrupted football operations, as the venue was scheduled to host a Ukrainian Premier League match on the following day. No decision had been made by the time of the report on whether the match would be moved or postponed. Chornomorets Stadium has previously hosted UEFA matches and games featuring the Ukrainian national team.

By July 20, Russian forces had reportedly destroyed or damaged 915 sports facilities across Ukraine, according to the Youth and Sports Ministry. The intensified attacks on Odesa during the peak summer tourist season have included missile strikes and drone attacks, targeting both civilian and commercial shipping.

In July alone, 124 attacks targeted Ukraine’s maritime infrastructure, hitting seaports and vessels. The assaults have damaged civilian ships and caused casualties among crew members, the Development of Communities and Territories Ministry reported. The strike on the stadium is the latest in a string of attacks on civilian and strategic targets in the Black Sea region.

“The attack occurred at around 3:30 p.m. local time, shortly after Ukraine's Air Force warned that jet-powered drones were approaching Odesa Oblast.”
