The essentials

July marks a grim milestone

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has announced that over 8,300 glide bombs were dropped by Russian forces in July. This is a record-breaking number since the start of the full-scale invasion. The figure surpasses the previous record of 8,266 glide bombs launched in June. The sharp increase in these attacks highlights the growing destruction on both the military and civilian fronts. This is especially true in regions where Russia shifts its focus. Russia moves from hardened military objectives to densely populated areas.

Glide bombs: a dual threat

Known in Ukraine as KABs, which stands for Kerovana Aviabomba. These glide bombs are repurposed aerial bombs. They have been equipped with wings and precision guidance systems. These systems include GPS, laser, or infrared targeting. Russian aircraft, particularly the Su-34, use this weaponry to strike from a distance. They avoid detection or interception by Ukrainian air defenses. These glide bombs are used in both urban and rural settings. Cities such as Dobropillia and Kramatorsk experience extensive damage. They experience this from the repeated use of this weapon.

No defense, no safety

Although KABs are equipped with guidance systems, they are frequently inaccurate, especially when powerful Ukrainian electronic warfare devices interfere with their targeting systems. This inaccuracy has led to a significant number of civilian casualties, even as front-line cities endure the heaviest impact. The attacks have become particularly lethal in built-up residential areas, where a single strike can cause entire sections of apartment buildings to collapse.

The cost of inaccuracy

KABs come in a range of warhead sizes. They range from as small as 300 kilograms to as large as 3 metric tons. Such destructive potential means a direct hit can destroy entire multi-story buildings. These weapons are primarily used against critical military infrastructure. This includes command centers, drone units, and bridges. Their increasing use in urban areas has expanded the threat. The threat is beyond the immediate war zone. Cities previously considered safer are now facing devastating impacts. Russia broadens the reach of its aerial attacks.

“The number passes the previous record of 8,266 set the previous month, the ministry said.”
Between the lines

The rise in glide bomb usage suggests a shift in Russian strategy, targeting not just military infrastructure but also civilian areas to break resistance.
