Nigeria's 2027 Election Faces Digital Infrastructure Challenges

Industry leaders argue that persistent connectivity gaps and cybersecurity risks threaten the credibility of upcoming Nigerian polls, urging a shift from pilot projects to systemic integration.
Stakeholders within Nigeria’s telecommunications and technology sectors have issued a stark warning that the integrity of the 2027 general elections is at risk due to fundamental infrastructure deficiencies. According to reports from the GN auto geopolitics/africa: Nigeria elections desk, these industry figures contend that poor connectivity, unresolved cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and the proliferation of misinformation could severely undermine public confidence in the electoral process if not addressed immediately.
The concerns were raised during the Nigeria eGovernment Summit 2026 in Lagos, where experts emphasized that election technology should no longer be viewed as a temporary, once-in-four-years project. Instead, they argued for a sustained investment approach that embeds digital tools as a trusted, permanent component of the country's electoral architecture, moving beyond experimental deployments to a robust, citizen-endorsed system.
Shifting from Pilots to Embedded Systems
Lanre Ajayi, chairman of the Nigeria eGovernment Summit, stated that the debate over whether to use technology in elections is effectively settled. The critical challenge, he noted, is how to mainstream these tools to ensure they are comprehensive and reliable. Ajayi warned that an election lacking public trust is not merely a procedural flaw but a profound crisis of legitimacy, highlighting that while biometric registration and electronic result transmission have transformed administration, infrastructure gaps remain a significant threat.
Cybersecurity and Information Integrity Concerns
Representatives from the Internet Society, Nigeria Chapter, identified technology resilience and information integrity as critical pillars for credible elections. They called for a rigorous analysis of the security and capability of electronic voting infrastructure to ensure that no polling unit is left disconnected. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to safeguard digital rights and privacy, warning that fake news and misinformation pose serious threats that require specific frameworks for information authentication to strengthen public trust.
Tony Emoekpere, president of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), reinforced the importance of reliable connectivity as the backbone of any digital transformation. He stressed that every digital platform and real-time exchange of information relies on robust telecommunications infrastructure. Emoekpere urged deliberate collaboration among the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), government bodies, telecom operators, and security agencies to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities before the polls take place.
Prioritizing Trust and Continuous Testing
The central objective identified by these stakeholders is the establishment of trust across all levels of the electoral process. Citizens must trust the technology, political actors must trust the process, and administrators must trust the underlying infrastructure. To achieve this, cybersecurity and data protection must be treated as fundamental components of election integrity rather than technical afterthoughts, requiring continuous testing and local capacity development in the lead-up to 2027.
