Nigeria’s Ogun State has formally launched its coordinating body for the upcoming general elections, signaling a shift toward structured grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 polls.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council for the 2027 General Elections, marking a significant step in the party's organizational preparations. The event, held on September 17, 2026, at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, established a formal structure tasked with coordinating presidential, governorship, and legislative campaigns across the state. According to the GN auto geopolitics/africa: Nigeria elections report, this move underscores the party’s intent to begin immediate grassroots consultations and mobilization efforts well ahead of the voting date.

Abiodun, who chairs the newly formed council, directed members to translate the party’s strategic structure into sustained engagement across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas, 236 wards, and all polling units. He emphasized that successful electoral outcomes require deliberate planning, organization, and vigilance, rather than relying solely on political reputation or large-scale rallies. The governor urged the council to take the party’s message to markets, farms, workplaces, and religious communities, prioritizing direct interaction with residents and responsiveness to their specific concerns.

Strategic Focus on Grassroots Engagement

The governor stated that the campaign must be grounded in ideas, achievements, and a credible vision, requiring outreach to every local government area, ward, and community. He tasked the council with communicating the administration’s record in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, security, and social interventions. Abiodun highlighted projects such as the Gateway International Airport as key components of the development agenda, arguing that the campaign should explain their relevance to residents and the wider economy to counter misinformation with facts and clarity.

In his address, Abiodun cautioned members against treating their appointments as ceremonial, describing them instead as positions of responsibility requiring discipline, humility, and strategic thinking. He noted that good work that is not effectively explained may be misunderstood, while falsehood repeated without challenge may begin to appear credible. The governor called for an issue-based and peaceful campaign, warning against factionalism, violence, intimidation, and sabotage, urging the party to maintain unity and place collective interests above individual differences.

Internal Unity and Collective Responsibility

APC Governorship Candidate Olamilekan Adeola urged party members to regard the 2027 election as a collective responsibility, assuring those not included in the Campaign Council that they remained part of the party’s grassroots mobilization structure. He pledged that his campaign would focus on issues and projects affecting the lives of residents, calling for sustained consultations in wards and Local Government Areas. Adeola emphasized the need for committees to work together in support of all APC candidates, from the presidential to the governorship and legislative elections.

Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, serving as Grand Patron of the Campaign Council, appealed to aggrieved members to put aside their differences and work together for the party. He urged members to “sheathe their swords” and ensure that the Campaign Council remained focused on its mandate. This call for unity reflects a broader effort within the party to manage internal dynamics and present a cohesive front as the political landscape for 2027 begins to take shape.

Preparations for the 2027 Electoral Landscape

The inauguration of the Ogun APC Campaign Council is part of a broader trend in Nigerian politics where parties are increasingly formalizing their structures early in the electoral cycle. By establishing a clear chain of command and operational guidelines, the party aims to streamline its messaging and resource allocation. This approach seeks to mitigate the risks of internal fragmentation and ensure that the party’s message reaches a wide and diverse electorate.

As the 2027 elections approach, stakeholders will be watching how effectively the council implements its mandate for grassroots engagement. The success of this strategy will likely depend on the ability of local party leaders to maintain discipline and unity while addressing the specific concerns of their communities. The coming months will provide early indicators of whether this structured approach can translate into tangible electoral gains for the APC in Ogun State and beyond.
