TNI Chief Calls for Broad Coalition to Resolve Papua Security Crisis

The Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, General Agus Subiyanto, has emphasized that a singular military approach is inadequate for resolving the persistent security challenges in Papua. Speaking to reporters in Jakarta on Sunday, Subiyanto argued that a comprehensive strategy involving government ministries, regional administrations, and local authorities is necessary to address the region's volatile conditions.
According to ANTARA News, the commander stated that the vastness of Papua’s territory and its difficult mountainous terrain demand cross-sector cooperation. He insisted that effective operations on the ground require the integration of diverse state capabilities, moving beyond a strictly defense-oriented framework to include broader administrative and developmental support.
Recent Violence in Highland Papua
These remarks follow a recent fatal incident in Highland Papua, where a commercial driver was killed by an armed group. The victim, Aris Sanda, was a native of Toraja who was found deceased near his burned-out vehicle in the Lake Habema area. Military officials identified the perpetrators as members of the Ndugama Regional Defense Command, a faction affiliated with the Free Papua Movement.
Lieutenant Colonel Wirya Arthadiguna, Head of Information for the TNI Habema Operations Command, detailed that the armed group intercepted Sanda’s pickup truck while it was transporting passengers. After questioning the occupants and ordering passengers to return to Wamena, the group detained Sanda and forcibly moved him toward the lake. Subsequent searches by joint military personnel located the victim’s body alongside the damaged vehicle.

In response to the attack, military authorities have intensified efforts to locate the perpetrators and strengthen security protocols across the region. The TNI Habema Operations Command stated that they are actively pursuing the individuals involved while supporting law enforcement processes in accordance with national regulations.
