Vietnam and Bulgaria Aim to Operationalize New Strategic Partnership

Sofia, Bulgaria — Vietnamese and Bulgarian officials have moved to emphasize practical outcomes following the recent elevation of their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Speaking at a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, both sides stressed that the political milestone established in October 2025 must now be translated into tangible economic and social benefits.

According to vietnamnet.vn, the event brought together more than 350 delegates, including diplomatic representatives and members of the Vietnamese community. The discussions centered on the need to convert decades of trust into specific programs, projects, and business connections that serve the populations of both nations.

Historic ties meet modern economic goals

Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Christo Polendakov described Vietnam as a dynamic economy and a key development center in Southeast Asia. He noted that the two countries have substantial room to expand cooperation, particularly in the digital and green economies. Polendakov affirmed that Bulgaria attaches great importance to its traditional friendship with Vietnam, which has endured for more than 75 years.

Polendakov stated that the 2025 agreement brought bilateral ties to the highest level of Bulgaria’s relations with any Asian country. He added that Bulgaria will continue to promote relations between the European Union and Vietnam, as well as between the EU and ASEAN, while working to deepen the strategic framework.

Vietnam cites robust growth statistics

Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyet highlighted the country’s strong economic performance, noting that the economy expanded by 8.02% in 2025. She reported that gross domestic product reached approximately 514 billion USD, while total goods trade exceeded 930 billion USD. These figures underscore Vietnam’s ambition to become a developed and prosperous nation by the middle of the 21st century.

The ambassador emphasized that science, technology, innovation, and high-quality human resources are the key drivers of this development trajectory. She called for stronger cooperation between the parliaments and agencies of the two countries, as well as greater connectivity among businesses, universities, and localities.

Community bonds strengthen diplomatic dialogue

Beyond high-level politics, the event highlighted the role of people-to-people ties in sustaining the relationship. The ambassador noted that thousands of Vietnamese have studied and worked in Bulgaria, creating strong bonds between the two societies. These connections are seen as a foundation for future cooperation in education and research.

As part of the National Day celebrations, the Vietnamese community in Bulgaria organized a friendly football match that drew numerous participants. This event served to strengthen community solidarity and express affection toward the homeland, reinforcing the social fabric that supports the broader diplomatic strategy.
