NSE Completes First 1000 Crore Tokenized Bond Issuance

REC and Larsen & Toubro issued 1,000 crore in tokens on the NSE platform, marking a first for Indian corporate debt.
The National Stock Exchange of India facilitated the first tokenized corporate bond issuances totaling 1,000 crore rupees. The transactions were executed on the NSE Electronic Bidding Platform. REC raised 500 crore rupees on September 7. Larsen & Toubro raised the remaining 500 crore rupees on September 9.
These deals operated under the Securities and Exchange Board of India Regulatory Sandbox Framework. The issuances mark the initial application of tokenization in the regulated corporate bond market. NSE reported the transactions as a successful integration of distributed ledger technology into existing capital market infrastructure.
Subscription details for the two issuances
REC set a base issue size of 100 crore rupees. The company included a green shoe option of 400 crore rupees. Subscription reached 7.9 times the base issue size. REC accepted a total of 500 crore rupees at a coupon rate of 7.30 percent.
Banks, financial institutions, mutual funds, and depositories participated in the REC issuance. Larsen & Toubro’s issuance demonstrated the technology’s application by a private sector issuer. The events confirmed that tokenized bonds can attract diverse investor categories within the current regulatory environment.
Regulatory support for digital securities
The Reserve Bank of India and SEBI provided guidance for the initiative. The framework allowed testing within India’s existing capital market infrastructure. The technology uses distributed ledger technology to maintain digital records across a network.
The system leverages existing digital settlement infrastructure rather than creating a new framework. NSE stated that the technology supports atomic settlement and improves transparency. The initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency across the securities lifecycle.
Market infrastructure innovation in India
NSE Executive Director Viral Mody described the implementation as a scalable solution. He noted the ability to translate emerging technologies into regulated market infrastructure. The exchange remains committed to advancing technology-led market infrastructure.
The two issuances serve as an initial demonstration of tokenization integration. They highlight the potential for broader adoption in corporate bond transactions. The moves position NSE at the forefront of technology-driven innovation in Indian capital markets.
