Gold Holds at $4,337.20 After US CPI Data

Spot gold maintained modest gains as US inflation data came in line with expectations.
Spot gold traded at $4,337.20 per ounce. The metal rose 0.5% on the day. It held these gains following the release of U.S. Consumer Price Index data. The market showed little directional movement in response to the figures.
Analysts warn of continued headwinds for the asset. The inflation data may force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates next week. This potential monetary tightening poses a risk to gold's current price level.
US inflation data matches forecasts
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 0.4% rise in the Consumer Price Index for August. This followed a 0.1% increase in July. The monthly figure aligned with economist expectations.
Headline inflation over the past 12 months rose 3.4%. This annual rate also matched consensus estimates. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.3% in August. This was higher than the 0.2% increase seen in July.
Core inflation runs slightly hot
Monthly core inflation came in slightly above projections. Consensus forecasts had predicted a 0.2% increase. The actual 0.3% rise indicates mild pressure in the underlying price trends. Annual core inflation stood at 2.4%.
This annual core rate is down from 2.5% in July. The figure remained in line with market estimates. The data suggests inflation is elevated but not accelerating sharply.
Market reaction remains muted
Gold struggled to find a solid direction on Friday. The metal managed to retain modest gains. Traders reacted cautiously to the mixed inflation signals. The source GN auto markets/commodities: gold prices notes the lack of a clear trend.
