Coinbase confirms its platform allows AI agents to execute trades in over 900 crypto pairs and S&P 500 equities. The company is building dedicated financial accounts for machine autonomy.

Coinbase has enabled AI agents to execute trades across more than 900 cryptocurrency pairs. The platform also supports trading in eligible U.S. futures and S&P 500 equities. CEO Brian Armstrong confirmed the exchange is building a financial account specifically for AI agents. This development allows machines to manage isolated portfolios with restricted permissions. Users can limit an agent’s financial exposure by funding separate accounts. The company states that agents can now access supported trading tools without human intervention for each transaction.

Armstrong announced the initiative on September 9 while responding to a query about agentic banking. He stated that Coinbase is constructing the necessary infrastructure for machine-driven financial management. The statement did not include a launch date, product name, or fee structure. Analysts view this as a directional update rather than a confirmed product launch. The company’s existing documentation provides more specific details on current capabilities. These features are already available through the Coinbase for Agents service.

Isolated portfolios limit agent risk

Coinbase documentation advises customers to create separate portfolios for AI agents. Users must fund these portfolios only with assets they are prepared to risk. This structure restricts the money an agent can access. It limits potential losses if an agent misunderstands an instruction. Agents cannot withdraw assets to external blockchain addresses. Transfers are limited to authorized internal Coinbase portfolios. Customers can revoke an application’s access through security settings at any time.

The service currently supports spot trading in multiple cryptocurrency pairs. It also handles conversions between USDC and U.S. dollars. Equity access and derivatives remain subject to regulatory restrictions. Eligibility requirements apply to specific asset classes. This framework separates automated trading from traditional manual execution. It provides a controlled environment for machine-based investment strategies.

Payment protocols for machine services

Coinbase is developing x402, a payment protocol for online resources. This system allows humans or machines to pay within an HTTP request. Agents can purchase tool calls or data without conventional checkout processes. The company reports its developer platform has processed over 100 million x402 payments. This activity occurs across Base and Solana networks. The figure counts payment volume but does not specify the number of independent users. It also does not indicate how many autonomous agents initiated these transactions.

Direct x402 payments through Coinbase for Agents are listed as coming soon. These features will allow agents to pay for research and data APIs. They will also cover computing resources consumed by the agent. Coinbase has not published a firm activation date for these functions. Independent researchers have identified security concerns in related systems. A July 2026 study reported rule violations across fifteen x402 facilitators. The study described possible asset theft and unpaid service use.

Regulatory and security considerations

Coinbase warns that AI agents may misinterpret user instructions. Users remain responsible for all authorized actions taken by their agents. The company filed two SEC registrations for U.S. stock perpetuals. These filings did not establish a product launch date. The equity functionality is part of a wider expansion beyond spot crypto. Regulatory restrictions continue to apply to derivatives and certain equities. The platform operates under existing compliance frameworks for automated trading.

According to GN markets/crypto (en-US), the current infrastructure uses a remote Model Context Protocol server. It also supports a local command-line interface for developers. This technical setup facilitates secure connections between AI applications and Coinbase Advanced Trade. The integration allows for programmatic access to market data and execution. The company emphasizes that these tools are designed for professional or advanced users. Basic retail investors may not have access to all these features. The expansion represents a significant shift in how trading interfaces are structured.
