Core Scientific agreed to supply 530 megawatts of AI-ready capacity starting in 2027.

Core Scientific agreed to supply 530 megawatts of AI-ready capacity to AMD starting in 2027. The deal may eventually expand to 2.5 gigawatts. This move signals a major shift in the data center industry. Cryptocurrency miners are converting their facilities for artificial intelligence workloads. They leverage existing power infrastructure and grid connections. These assets were originally built for mining. They now serve the high demand for AI inference.

Bitcoin miners spent years securing land and substations for 24/7 operations. AI companies face a shortage of powered data center space. The grid connections miners established are now highly valued. CoreWeave illustrates this transition. It began as Atlantic Crypto in 2017. It mined Ethereum using graphics processors. By 2022, most of its revenue came from mining. It has since abandoned those services. It now sells access to a purpose-built AI cloud.

Infrastructure Upgrades Required for AI

Conversion requires significant capital expenditure. Mining uses application-specific integrated circuits for narrow calculations. AI training requires expensive GPUs. Fast networking and dependable fiber connections are essential. Backup power and sophisticated cooling systems are necessary. IREN acknowledged these costs in its annual filing. It is installing direct-to-chip liquid cooling in Texas. The company is replacing some Bitcoin equipment with GPUs. Its cloud service gives customers access to Nvidia processors.

Inference Demand Drives Industry Shift

Inference provides fast responses to user interactions. Training models is an intermittent task. Inference occurs every time a user generates an image. It also happens when questioning a chatbot. This requires speed and reliability. CoreWeave estimates inference infrastructure will reach $49 billion by 2028. Production workloads will account for a larger share of AI computing. Bit Digital reported an 84% rise in cloud revenue in early 2025. Its Bitcoin mining revenue fell 64% in the same period.

Market Valuation of Compute Assets

Former miners are chasing inference demand aggressively. Bit Digital spun off its AI operation as WhiteFiber. This entity supports model training and inference. HIVE is converting facilities for similar purposes. The industry is squeezed by volatile cryptocurrency prices. Mining difficulty continues to rise. Bitcoin rewards halve periodically. AI offers a more stable revenue stream. GN markets/crypto (en-US) notes the strategic importance of this pivot. Compute resources have become the primary industrial asset.
