Bank of Japan Balance Sheet Hits 644 Trillion Yen

The Bank of Japan reports a total asset value of 644.27 trillion yen. Japanese government securities remain the dominant asset class.

The Bank of Japan recorded total assets of 644,271,593,576 thousand yen as of September 10, 2026. This figure matches the total liabilities and net assets exactly. The balance sheet reflects the scale of monetary operations currently in place.

Japanese government securities account for 519,628,784,588 thousand yen of that total. This represents 80.6% of all assets. The central bank holds no treasury discount bills. Corporate bonds add 1,267,169,411 thousand yen to the portfolio.

Government Securities Dominate Portfolio

Index-linked exchange-traded funds held in trust amount to 36,973,027,702 thousand yen. Real estate investment trust holdings total 650,842,283 thousand yen. Loans excluding those to the Deposit Insurance Corporation stand at 71,858,400,000 thousand yen.

Foreign currency assets are valued at 11,973,976,047 thousand yen. Cash holdings, reserved for circulation, reach 432,652,163 thousand yen. Gold reserves are recorded at 441,253,409 thousand yen.

Liability Structure Remains Stable

Current deposits form the largest liability at 412,657,448,866 thousand yen. Banknotes in circulation total 114,482,574,813 thousand yen. Other deposits, including those from foreign central banks, amount to 44,296,324,699 thousand yen.

Payables under repurchase agreements stand at 38,252,941,768 thousand yen. Government deposits are recorded at 18,812,135,183 thousand yen. Legal and special reserves total 3,872,243,310 thousand yen.

Loan Support Programs Continue

Outstanding loans under the Loan Support Program total 39,105,900,000 thousand yen. Funds-supplying operations against pooled collateral account for 32,752,300,000 thousand yen. These operations include support for disaster areas and climate change financing.
