Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faces questions on rising energy costs and inflation during congressional testimony.

The nationwide average pump price reached $4.32 per gallon as of Monday. This represents a $1.14 increase compared to levels from twelve months ago.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent testified before the House Financial Services Committee on Tuesday. He defended the administration's economic isolation campaign against Iran while addressing Democratic concerns about energy costs.

Energy costs drive inflation pressure

Oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel due to the escalating conflict. Diesel prices hit $6.23 per gallon, marking a $2.54 rise year over year.

The consumer price index stands 3.4% above year-ago levels. Lawmakers questioned the tension between calls for rate cuts and market expectations for hikes to contain inflation.

Borrowing costs and debt scale

The national debt has exceeded $40 trillion. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note briefly reached 5.0% on Monday before easing back.

The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate topped 7% last week. This figure highlights the administration's focus on affordability amid rising borrowing costs.

Economic data supports policy stance

Bessent cited wage growth for the bottom 25% of earners as outpacing top earners. The unemployment rate stands at 4.1%.

The S&P 500 is up roughly 27% since the start of the current term. Over 64 million returns claimed last year's tax cuts, according to GN markets/inflation (en-US) data.
