Average diesel costs in Chicago reached $6.58 per gallon on Friday, marking a new record. Gasoline prices also climbed to $5.14, up from $4.76 the previous week.

Chicago diesel prices hit a record high of $6.58 per gallon on Friday. Some local stations charged up to $7.99 per gallon. The average price for regular gasoline in the city was $5.14 per gallon. This represents a jump from $4.76 just one week prior. Senator Dick Durbin stated that these levels are expected to persist. He attributed the spike directly to federal leadership decisions.

Durbin argued that President Trump is personally responsible for the price increases. He cited the conflict in Iran as the primary driver. Durbin noted that the administration did not seek congressional approval for military action. He claimed this lack of consultation contributed to the current market instability. Drivers in the region reported significant financial strain from the higher costs.

Midwest Refinery Outage Worsens Supply

A power outage halted operations at the Exxon Mobil Joliet Refinery. This facility produces 10% of the region's gasoline and diesel. The shutdown removed a significant portion of local supply. Officials have not confirmed when the plant will resume normal operations. This operational halt exacerbated the existing price pressure in the Midwest.

White House Defends Energy Policy

The White House rejected the criticism regarding fuel costs. Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers stated that the administration is committed to lowering costs. She claimed that maintaining control of the Strait of Hormuz will lower prices. Rogers asserted that oil and gas prices will return to pre-conflict levels. She emphasized the goal of putting more money in consumer pockets.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve Depleted

Experts note that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has been drawn down. This reserve is typically reserved for emergency situations. Durbin observed that previous presidents rarely used this tool. He stated that the drawdown has not stabilized prices. The reserve is not an infinite source of supply.
