The price of a 10-quart case of Kirkland Signature full synthetic motor oil has surged to $58 at Costco. This marks a sharp increase from the mid-$30s range observed for several years. The retailer has simultaneously imposed strict purchase limits on these products.

A 10-quart case of Kirkland Signature full synthetic motor oil is now priced at $58 on Costco’s website. The previous stable price hovered between $30 and $35 for much of the past decade. Customers are now restricted to purchasing two cases per week. This limit is displayed in bold text on the product page. Additionally, the retailer caps purchases of Mobil 1 full-synthetic motor oil at five six-packs per membership. The six-pack of Mobil 1 is listed at approximately $44. These measures reflect a broader tightening of supply for high-quality lubricants.

Crude oil conflict drives supply tightness

Synthetic motor oil production relies heavily on Group III base oils. These base oils are derived from crude oil refining processes. A significant portion of the Group III supply for the U.S. market is imported from the Persian Gulf. Ongoing geopolitical conflict in the region has disrupted these supply chains. Industry analysts note that this disruption has reduced the availability of high-grade base stocks. The scarcity of raw materials has forced manufacturers and retailers to adjust pricing strategies.

Brent crude exceeds $109 threshold

Brent Crude prices exceeded $109 per barrel on Monday morning. This price point represents a substantial rise from levels below $72 in early July. The price escalation is tied to uncertainty over diplomatic resolutions in the Middle East. Normal oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remain at risk. According to data from GN auto markets/energy: crude oil prices, the market is reacting to persistent supply fears. The volatility in crude markets is directly influencing downstream product costs.

Fuel prices hit new records

The national average price of regular gasoline has reached nearly $4.32 per gallon. This figure is up from $4.08 a month ago and $3.18 a year ago. Diesel prices have also set new records, surpassing $6.00 per gallon on average. The average diesel price reached $6.23 per gallon on Monday. This is a significant increase from $5.90 per gallon just one week prior. Diesel and gasoline prices generally track crude oil market movements. Other retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, and AutoZone have not yet announced similar price hikes or purchase limits.
