US Gasoline Prices Spike 17.2 Cents Before Weekend Drop

National average gasoline prices reached $4.25 per gallon on Monday, marking a sharp weekly increase. Diesel costs climbed even faster to $6.183 per gallon.
The national average price for gasoline rose 17.2 cents per gallon over the last seven days. The average stood at $4.25 per gallon on Monday. Diesel prices increased by 31.6 cents to reach $6.183 per gallon. These figures represent significant jumps from the previous week's levels.
Ohio drivers saw a 25.1 cent increase in average gasoline costs this week. The state average hit $4.16 per gallon on Monday. This is 11.6 cents lower than the price a month ago. However, it is $1.30 higher than the average recorded one year ago.
Local Station Prices Fluctuate Sharply
Prices in Van Worth spiked to $4.29 per gallon for self-serve regular. This peak occurred late last week. Prices began to decline over the weekend. By Monday evening, some stations in the area listed prices as low as $3.89 per gallon.
The price gap across Ohio stations reached $2.20 per gallon on Sunday. The cheapest station in the state charged $3.49 per gallon. The most expensive station charged $5.69 per gallon. This wide variance reflects localized supply and demand shifts.
Geopolitical Tensions Drive Global Supply Constraints
Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy identified multiple geopolitical factors behind the price surge. Tensions between the United States and Iran contributed to the rise. New hostilities in the Red Sea added to the pressure. The shutdown of Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline further reduced supply.
Attacks knocked two Russian refineries offline over the weekend. These closures strain global refined product supplies. Diesel prices may climb faster due to these disruptions. Seasonal relief is unlikely to offset these supply issues in the near term.
Historical Data Shows Rising Baseline Costs
Current prices are $1.14 per gallon higher than the national average from a year ago. The one-year average was $3.11 per gallon. Prices are also up 19 cents from the monthly average. These figures come from data covering over 150,000 gas stations.
The source, GN auto markets/energy: gasoline prices, notes continued volatility ahead. Motorists should expect further changes in the coming weeks. The combination of geopolitical risk and supply constraints dominates the market outlook. No immediate relief is forecast.
