Costco raised the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil to approximately $58, nearly doubling the cost from the previous year's $30 price point.

Costco raised the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil to approximately $58. This price is nearly double the roughly $30 charged for the same two-pack last year. The retailer also limited customer purchases to two boxes per week.

Costco imposed similar limits on Mobil 1 full-synthetic motor oil. The six-pack of 1-quart bottles costs about $44. Customers can buy up to five of these packs per membership.

Geopolitical tensions drive crude oil prices higher

According to GN auto markets/energy: crude oil prices, these retail changes reflect broader supply chain pressures. Brent crude oil prices exceeded $109 per barrel on Monday morning. This marks the highest level in months.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, cited several factors for the rise. Attacks in the Middle East and the Red Sea contributed to the increase. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries also played a role.

The East-West Crude Oil Pipeline in Saudi Arabia is out of service for weeks. Two regional officials confirmed this suspension to The Associated Press. This disruption further tightens global supply.

Consumer impact remains limited for typical drivers

De Haan noted that the purchase limits are reasonable for most individuals. A standard car requires four to five quarts every 5,000 miles. The current limits allow for this maintenance cycle without issue.

Fleet managers for large vehicle counts may face tighter constraints. For the average consumer, the impact is minimal. The limits prevent bulk buying rather than restricting personal use.

Gasoline and diesel prices continue to climb

Pump prices follow crude oil trends closely. The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.31. This is a significant increase from the $3.17 average reported a year ago.

Diesel prices reached a record high of $6.23 per gallon on Monday. This is more than double the $3.70 average from the same period last year. Oil companies profit more from refining diesel and gasoline than from selling motor oil.
