The state average remains 32 cents below the national average of $4.46. GN auto markets/energy data shows a regular gallon increased by seven cents in the last 24 hours. Drivers reported significant cost impacts on daily travel and business operations.
Political Debate Over Fuel Tax Relief
Lawmakers are debating a suspension of state gas taxes. The current rate is approximately 29 cents per gallon. This places the state in the 20th lowest tier nationally. Governor Henry McMaster opposes immediate tax cuts. He cited long-term road funding needs as a primary concern.
Congressman Russell Fry called for a federal tax suspension. Attorney General Alan Wilson proposed a 120-day temporary state suspension. Wilson emphasized maintaining full funding for road infrastructure. McMaster argued that reducing taxes would directly cut revenue for maintenance.
Price Increases Driven By Conflict
Brown University data links the price spike to geopolitical events. Since the U.S. entered the conflict in Iran in February, regular gas rose 49 percent. Diesel prices increased by 74 percent over the same period.
Local residents expressed frustration over the rising costs. One driver noted that test drives have shortened to two minutes. Another stated that any price below $4.00 would provide financial relief. The market remains volatile with no immediate signs of a price drop.
