German Fuel Prices Hit Record High as Brent Crude Nears 110 Dollars

German gasoline prices reached a historic peak of 2.273 euros per liter on Sunday. Brent crude oil traded near 110 dollars amid regional conflict.
The average price for a liter of Super E10 gasoline in Germany hit a new all-time high of 2.273 euros on Sunday. This figure surpassed the previous record set in March 2022. Diesel fuel also rose to 2.404 euros per liter during the same period. These levels represent a significant increase compared to prices at the end of August. The rise is attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Brent crude oil prices climbed toward 110 dollars per barrel in recent trading. The current market price stands at approximately 107 dollars. This surge in raw material costs has transmitted directly to consumer fuel prices. The geopolitical instability has created uncertainty for energy markets across Europe.
Geopolitical conflict drives crude oil costs
The escalation involves the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels in Yemen. These groups are aligned with Iran. Saudi Arabia has increased shipments via the Red Sea to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. The kingdom relies on the East-West pipeline for this alternative route. Houthi attacks on this infrastructure have intensified pressure on global supply chains.
A planned meeting between Iran and Gulf states in Oman was postponed. This meeting was intended to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The delay adds to the uncertainty surrounding regional energy security. Market participants are monitoring these developments closely.
Industry leaders warn of higher retail prices
Herbert Rabl from the Tankstellen-Interessenverband predicts that fuel prices could reach three euros per liter. He noted that such prices are already common on German autobahns. Rabl criticized oil majors for maintaining high margins despite supply issues. He stated that companies are compensating for lower prices in the United States by raising prices in Europe.
The share of oil imported from the Gulf region is relatively small in Germany. However, global price increases affect domestic costs regardless of origin. Gas station operators also face higher costs for procuring fuel. Rabl argued that the current pricing structure benefits large corporations at the expense of retailers and consumers.
Drivers face limited options to save money
Fuel prices in Germany can only be raised once a day at noon. Prices are often lowest in the late morning before the update. Consumers are advised to check prices just before the midday adjustment. This strategy may offer slight savings during periods of volatility.
High fuel costs are accelerating the shift toward electric vehicles. Sales of EVs have risen significantly in recent months. Chinese manufacturers are entering the German market with competitive pricing. This trend is putting downward pressure on the cost of new electric cars.
