Texas Gas Prices Approach Four Dollars per Gallon

Texas fuel costs are nearing a historic high as the average price for regular unleaded approaches $4.00 per gallon. Diesel prices are simultaneously closing in on the $6.00 mark, marking the most expensive September in the state's recent history.
The statewide average for regular unleaded gasoline is trending toward $4.00 per gallon. Diesel fuel is approaching $6.00 per gallon, according to Daniel Armbruster of AAA Texas. In the Sherman-Denison area, the average price stands at $3.89 per gallon. This figure represents an increase of $1.17 compared to the same period last year.
This September is on track to be the most expensive month for fuel in the past 26 years. Crude oil prices remain elevated near $100 per barrel, sustaining high retail costs. Drivers are seeking alternatives to reduce their fuel expenditure in response to these rising numbers.
Price Variations Across Stations
Retail prices show significant divergence between locations. One local station sold unleaded gasoline at $3.99 per gallon. A nearby Sam’s Club location offered the same fuel at $3.65 per gallon. This difference amounts to a 34-cent saving per gallon for consumers choosing the lower-priced option.
John Sanborn, a driver, noted that his membership typically saves him 10 cents per gallon. On this specific day, the discount reached 35 cents. For a vehicle using 20 gallons weekly, this saving generates $7.00 in weekly savings. Over a year, this totals approximately $364.00, which exceeds the annual membership fee of $110.00.
Driver Strategies for Savings
Daniel Armbruster, a spokesperson for AAA Texas, identified driver behavior as the primary factor in fuel efficiency. He advised against hard acceleration and recommended adjusting speed to synchronize with traffic signals. Using light to moderate throttle allows automatic transmissions to upshift sooner, reducing fuel consumption.
Cruise control can maintain constant speeds and save fuel on safe roads. Drivers should avoid using this feature on slippery surfaces. Planning errands into efficient routes and traveling outside high-traffic times also contribute to lower fuel usage. Proper vehicle maintenance, particularly tire pressure, remains a critical component of efficiency.
Outlook for Price Reductions
Historical data suggests gas prices typically decline as summer travel demand eases. The upcoming switch to winter blend gasoline has historically resulted in a price decrease of 15 to 25 cents per gallon. However, current crude oil levels near $100 per barrel continue to exert upward pressure on retail prices.
