The statewide average for diesel fuel in Wisconsin hit $6.19 per gallon on Thursday. This figure marks the highest price recorded in the state’s history. The cost is almost $1 higher than the average from one month ago. Prices at this time last year were 44% lower than current levels.

Truck drivers are absorbing the immediate financial pressure of these rates. Dan Fiumano, a professional driver, noted that independent operators often pay for their own fuel. These drivers must raise their hauling rates to cover the increased expenses. Fiumano stated that rising fuel costs force companies to adjust pricing to maintain operational viability.

Retailers face higher vendor delivery fees

Navjoot Sandhar, owner of Sentry Foods in Milwaukee, reports increased delivery charges from suppliers. His store works with 80 to 100 vendors weekly. Sandhar calculates that a $5 increase per vendor adds roughly $500 to his weekly costs. Over a full year, this amounts to approximately $20,000 in additional spending on logistics.

Sandhar explained that these costs could otherwise be used to lower retail prices. Instead, the expense is passed through the supply chain. He described a cycle where higher fuel costs reduce consumer spending power. This dynamic impacts both business margins and customer budgets simultaneously.

Industry strain affects driver employment

Fiumano observed that some importers have failed due to inability to manage fuel expenses. When businesses close, drivers lose their jobs. Fiumano noted that this job loss creates financial strain for families. The sector faces significant pressure as costs remain elevated for extended periods.
