Asian equity markets closed higher on Friday. The Nikkei 225 index rose 1.4% to finish at 65,018.95. This gain followed a rate hike by the Bank of Japan. The central bank raised its benchmark rate to 1.25%. This level marks a 31-year high. Investors reacted positively to the move. It had been widely anticipated by analysts.
European benchmarks slipped in early trading. France's CAC 40 fell 0.6% to 8,136.51. The German DAX dropped 0.5% to 25,577.02. Britain's FTSE 100 declined 0.8% to 10,730.39. U.S. futures pointed to modest gains. Dow futures rose 0.2% to 52,299.00. S&P 500 futures increased 0.3% to 7,729.50.
Oil Prices Drop Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Brent crude oil lost 2.15% in Asian trading. The price settled at $102.57 per barrel. U.S. benchmark crude slid 1.92% to $99.95. These declines eased pressure on equities. Prices had nearly reached $110 earlier in the week. Fears of supply disruptions from the Middle East drove that spike. Brent remains above the $72 level seen in summer.
The Federal Reserve raised its key rate on Wednesday. The increase was 25 basis points. This was the first hike in over three years. Officials signaled a potential additional increase this year. They aim to control high inflation. The Bank of Japan followed suit with its own hike. U.S. pressure contributed to the Japanese decision.
Currency Markets Reflect Rate Changes
The U.S. dollar strengthened against the yen. The exchange rate rose to 157.73 yen. It had been 155.95 yen previously. The euro gained slightly against the dollar. It reached $1.1486 from $1.1480. Japan and the United States intervened recently in the currency market. They attempted to prop up the yen. Those efforts did not significantly alter the trend.
