The KOSPI index opened 3.14% lower at 6,692.62 on September 14. This decline breaches the 6,700 support level. The drop follows rising U.S. interest rate expectations and Bank of Japan tightening fears.

Foreign investors net sold 668.7 billion won in the opening minutes. Institutional investors added to the selling with 226.6 billion won in net sales. Retail buyers attempted to support the market with 849 billion won in net purchases, but failed to stop the slide.

U.S. Inflation Drives Rate Expectations

U.S. core consumer prices rose 0.3% month-over-month last week. This figure exceeded the 0.2% market consensus. The data increased the probability of a September Federal Reserve rate hike to 87%.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached 4.98% intraday. The 2-year yield stood at 4.27%. These rising yields cap the upside for equity markets in Seoul.

Tech Giants Lead Market Decline

Samsung Electronics fell approximately 3% in early trading. SK Hynix dropped around 4%. SK Square declined by approximately 6%. These large-cap weights deepened the index loss.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung C&T both slid around 4%. Hyundai Motor fell approximately 3%. Samsung Life Insurance dropped around 5%. Hanwha Aerospace was the notable exception, rising 1%.

Yen Strength Affects Won Currency

The dollar-yen exchange rate fell 0.81 yen to 153.61. Markets price in a Bank of Japan rate hike to 1.25% in September. This expectation fuels yen buying pressure.

The dollar-won pair traded at 1,345.4 won in Seoul. This is a 0.5 won drop from the previous close. Analysts from Woori Bank expect the pair to test the 1,330 won range intraday. Semiconductor exporters continue steady dollar sales, capping the won's decline. GN auto markets/forex notes that import settlements support the currency floor.
