Commerce data shows August retail sales beat forecasts, driven by strong consumer spending despite recent rate hikes.

Key points

  • US retail sales increased 1.2% in August, beating the 0.8% analyst forecast.
  • Non-store retailers drove growth with a 2.6% rise in receipts during the month.
  • Zacks names Five Below, Dollar Tree, Kohl's, Target, and TJX as top picks.

US retail sales rose 1.2% in August, marking the sharpest monthly gain since March. This increase exceeded analyst expectations of a 0.8% rise and reversed a 0.5% decline in July. The data indicates robust consumer demand despite persistent inflation pressures.

The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by a quarter point just days before this report. However, households continued to spend aggressively while saving less. Non-store retailers led the growth with a 2.6% jump in receipts.

Consumer Spending Defies Rate Hikes

Retail sales excluding autos and gasoline grew 1.4% in August. This was the largest increase since September 2024. Clothing stores saw a 0.7% rise due to back-to-school purchases.

Food services and drinking places posted a 1.2% increase. Vehicle and parts dealers also climbed 0.6% for the month. These gains suggest the economy remains resilient against higher borrowing costs.

Zacks Highlights Five Value Retail Stocks

Zacks Investment Research identifies five companies benefiting from this trend. Five Below, Dollar Tree, Kohl's, Target, and TJX are selected for their strong online presence. Five Below's earnings estimates rose 15.2% over the last 60 days.

Target has invested heavily in technology and supply chain improvements. These moves help it compete effectively with larger e-commerce platforms. Analysts expect Five Below to see 57.6% earnings growth this year.

Inflation Risks and Future Outlook

Producer and consumer prices continued to jump in August. High gasoline prices partially drove the overall retail sales increase. Tensions in the Middle East keep oil prices elevated.

Inflation is likely to ease once oil prices stabilize. This stabilization should boost the retail sector in the near term. Consumers remain willing to spend despite the economic headwinds.
