GBP/USD Slides as US Dollar Strength Outweighs UK Rate Hikes

Crédit Agricole forecasts a drop to 1.31 by December, citing persistent US economic outperformance and UK fiscal risks that outweigh potential Bank of England tightening.
Crédit Agricole projects the British Pound to US Dollar exchange rate will fall to 1.31 by December. The bank expects a slow recovery to 1.39 only by the end of 2027. This outlook persists despite expectations of a higher UK interest rate in November.
The currency closed Friday at 1.3395, down nearly 1% for the week. The year-end target sits roughly 2.2% below the current level. Analysts note that US economic strength and investment flows are sustaining Dollar demand over the next six months.
US Dollar Strength Dominates Trade Flows
Crédit Agricole maintains a bullish stance on the US Dollar. The bank argues that American economic outperformance will keep pressure on Sterling. Weak UK growth and persistent inflation further undermine confidence in British fiscal prospects.
The bank views the recent Bank of England decision as a diluted signal. Changes to the bond-selling programme obscured the rate path. This ambiguity contributed to the immediate decline in the Pound after the announcement.
November Rate Hike Faces Uncertainty
Goldman Sachs and Citi both expect a quarter-point increase to 4% in November. The Bank of England voted 6-3 to hold rates at 3.75%. The decision included a stronger warning about inflation, but timing remains uncertain.
Citi links the decision to geopolitical factors in the Gulf. A resolution of tensions could unravel the hawkish narrative. Lower energy prices or weak data could also prevent the expected hike.
Long-Term Recovery Path Remains Gradual
The forecast shows 1.32 in March and 1.34 in June. Sterling is expected to reach 1.37 in September. The final target of 1.39 arrives in December 2027.
This trajectory relies on fading US Dollar support rather than repeated UK hikes. US growth is projected to cool in 2027. Policy uncertainty and public finance concerns may then shift the balance back toward the Pound.
