USD/JPY drops toward 152 support as BoJ hikes rates to 1.25%.

Key points

  • USD/JPY approaches 152.00 support after breaking below the 20-day EMA at 156.45.
  • The BoJ is expected to raise rates to 1.25%, reducing the yield gap with the Fed.
  • Brent crude above 100 dollars and rising food costs complicate central bank policy paths.

USD/JPY fell toward the 152.00 level as yen buying accelerated ahead of a Bank of Japan policy decision. The pair broke below key technical support after traders priced in a 25 basis point rate hike.

Market focus shifted to Governor Kazuo Ueda’s guidance, which may signal a faster path to tighter policy. This move reduces the interest rate gap with the United States and strengthens the yen.

BoJ Hike Narrows Interest Rate Gap

The Bank of Japan is expected to raise its policy rate to 1.25%. This action extends a tightening cycle that gradually closes the yield differential with major economies.

Danske Bank analysts note that the hike is largely priced in. Future guidance will determine if the BoJ commits to more aggressive rate increases.

The Federal Reserve faces conflicting pressures from its own policymakers. Sixteen of eighteen officials expect at least one additional U.S. rate increase this year.

Technical Levels Define Downside Risk

The pair trades below the 20-day exponential moving average at 156.45. This level acts as the first significant barrier for any near-term recovery.

A decisive break below 152.00 exposes the pair to a drop toward 149.00. This area aligns with the lower boundary of the broader trading channel.

Daily RSI indicators show oversold conditions similar to levels seen in 2024. A bullish divergence suggests selling pressure may be stretching toward a limit.

Inflation and Intervention Add Volatility

Brent crude prices moved back above 100 dollars per barrel. The UN food price index also hit its highest level since late 2022.
