SpaceX Nasdaq 100 Weighting Set to Double as Musk Confirms 2027 AI Launch

Index Rebalancing Drives Passive Flows
Approximately $1.7 trillion in assets track the Nasdaq 100. This includes the $481 billion Invesco QQQ Trust. The increase in SpaceX’s weight is driven by the expansion of its free float. Share lockups that limited trading volume after the IPO have expired.
Earlier concerns about heavy insider selling during recent lockup expirations did not materialize. Further expirations may increase the weighting again. The final allocation will be determined later this month. Funds must adjust their portfolios to match the new index composition.
Musk Confirms 2027 Orbital AI Launch
Elon Musk stated he is highly confident SpaceX will launch Nvidia AI computers into orbit in 2027. The hardware is a space-optimized version of the Vera Rubin NVL72 platform. It combines 72 Rubin graphics processing units with 36 Vera central processing units.
Musk previously narrowed the launch window to the fourth quarter of 2027. Significant scale is expected in 2028. SpaceX will build this infrastructure exclusively around Nvidia technology. The design addresses weight, radiation, and thermal constraints of space.
Orbital Infrastructure Faces Technical Hurdles
SpaceX argues orbital data centers avoid land and electricity limits on Earth. Musk predicts space will become the cheapest place for AI within three years. The company has sought approval for up to one million AI satellites.
Starship is crucial for lowering launch costs. Radiation, cooling, and maintenance remain significant challenges. SpaceX has signed compute-rental agreements with Anthropic and Google. Nvidia holds a $21 billion investment in the company as of mid-2026.
